How MUNYA Makes "New Synth Folk" Addictive To Listen To

MUNYA is a musician located in Montreal. She considers her style to be “New Synth Folk” and independently releases all her music through MUNYA records. MUNYA’s music is innovative and sounds like a psychedelic dreamscape. Although one can hear a fusion of genres within her music, she describes it as a mix of pop, indie, dance, and R&B.

MUNYA’s songs captivate with harmony, groovy rhythm and innovative forms. It's so refreshing to be pleasantly surprised by a harmonic progression or the form when listening to her tracks. One of my favorite examples of this technique would be in It’s All About You with a George Harrison-like transition from the first chorus to the instrumental break.

The sitar in this section leading into the ad lib vocal section blows me away every time I listen to it!

Although I love all of MUNYA’s songs, my favorite has to be Des Bisous Partout. The song

uses a simple chord progression with trippy synths, funky bass lines and french lyrics that roll off the tongue. The form also keeps the songs interesting by sandwiching one chorus section by the same verse. MUNYA’s newest release Boca Chica has all the same charm with a new flavor. The song opens with an incredibly catchy guitar riff combined with bubbly synth chords. This combined with the sensational effects has me playing this song on repeat!
